Kecia A. Johnson My name is Kecia A. Johnson, and I am in my first year of graduate school at the University of Florida studying mass communication.  This blog will show what I’ve learned in my Journalists’ Toolkit courses with professor Mindy McAdams, which led to my internship this summer at The Miami Herald.

As an undergradute student at the University of Florida, I earned a bachelor of science degree in journalism in 2006. I also competed for the UF  Women’s Track and Cross Country teams.  Although I have been a life-long sports enthusiast, I discovered my career goals of becoming a sports information officer or sports journalist after I entered college.  I remember when I helped cover the 2007 NCAA East Regional Championships for TrackShark.com. Listen to my first podcast: http://www.trackshark.com/podcasts/2007/ncaa_east.php

However after taking the Journalists’ Toolkit courses,  I’ve been thinking about journalism outside of the world of sports.  Although I will always admire the work of sports journalists (interviews after emotional games and beautiful photos of athletes competing) I’ve realized all the possibilities and the millions of stories and people I could meet outside of the sports arena. I am excited about this internship because it symbolizes my leap from a comfortable foundation in  traditional print journalism to the unfamiliar online and digital platforms.  I’m looking forward to using the skills I’ve learned in class, adding more skills to my toolkit, and meeting and learning from the professionals at The Miami Herald.
